Five handwritten letters (6 p.), two on Weston letterhead stationery from Carmel, Calif., and two postcards from Santa Monica,
Calif., to his friend Alfred Honigbaum in San Francisco. In one letter Weston writes of being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship
(the first ever given for photography) and his plans to use the money to travel throughout California for a year. In another
letter (Aug. 25, 1935) he writes in detail of his being accused of being a Communist." ... I am labeled (or libeled) as a
Communist ... but to call me a Communist ... is both ironical and funny. The Communists consider me practically a facist and
an ivory-tower artist, though I am neither." He wonders about the source of the accusations and writes, "I am wondering if
I could bring suit for libel. I would like to -- but against whom!" Also includes a photocopy of Weston's handwritten offer
(sent out to a select list of 25 buyers) to sell 250 of his photographs for $1,000 to the first person or organization that
responds.

Edward Henry Weston (March 24, 1886-January 1, 1958) was a 20th century American photographer. In 1937 Weston was the first
photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship, and over the next two years produced nearly 1,400 negatives using his 8x10
view camera. Some of his most famous photographs were taken of the trees and rocks at Point Lobos, California, near where
he lived for many years.
Alfred Honigbaum was a San Francisco business executive and patron of the arts. He is mentioned several times in Edward Weston's
"Day Books."
